Kim & Kanye on the Cover of Vogue

It’s true, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have made it onto the cover of Vogue Magazine, otherwise known as The Fashion Bible.  Since the moment the images debuted there’s been a wide array of mixed opinions from celebrities and civilians alike. Personally I think it’s a lovely cover shot, and why wouldn’t it be, it was shot by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz.  Kim looks stunning in a white/grey Lanvin bridal gown as she looks directly into the camera with Kanye gazing at her adoringly.

Anna Wintour herself addressed her choice in cover stars in her editors letter for the issue, and I think her statement makes total sense. She said, “Part of the pleasure of editing Vogue, one that lies in a long tradition of this magazine, is being able to feature those who define the culture at any given moment, who stir things up, whose presence in the world shapes the way it looks and influences the way we see it. I think we can all agree on the fact that that role is currently being played by Kim and Kanye to a T.”

Included in the feature are a number of images of Kim and Kanye in wedding regalia as well as a number of sweet shots with their baby daughter North (who certainly steals the show).

And speaking of defining culture and stirring things up, you know you’ve done something right when you have James Franco and Seth Rogen spoofing you (for the 2nd time this year).

The History of Cool at the Museum At FIT

The Museum at FIT is currently hosting the history of the leather moto jacket (or as I like to call it “The History of Cool”) via a new exhibit entitled “Beyond Rebellion: Fashioning the Biker Jacket”.  If there’s one garment that’s become synonymous with the word cool, it’s the moto jacket.  Today fashionistas the world over rock the moto jacket as an extension of their selves, but it started out as a symbol of American rebellion and badass-dom.  Think Marlon Brando, Fonzie and The Ramones and  try to imagine any one of them without their quintessential leather jacket.

The exhibit will study the history of the jacket, its utilitarian roots, its construction, and the designs that it still inspires today.  The exhibition is small but fascinating, and completely curated by FIT graduate students. The show is divided into 3 sections: The Original Moto Jacket, The Moto Jacket & The Counterculture, and Reinterpreting the Moto Jacket.

The exhibit runs through April 5th and is free to the public.

Urban Outfitters Is Going For Broke In NYC

Hip retail chain Urban Outfitters is going for broke in 2014 by opening not 1 but 2 huge new concept stores in NYC.

Opening first will be their “Indie Concept Center” located in the hip Williamsburg neighborhood.  With 4 floors (plus a roof space), this behemoth will definitely be bringing something new to the neighborhood.  The Williamsburg location will include rotating pop-up shops on the basement level (starting with Adidas Blue), as well as goods from local artists and designers on the ground floor and the Urban Vintage renewal shop. The second floor will be dedicated to womenswear and the third will house both men’s clothing as well as The Gorbals eatery and bar (yes, you heard that right, a bar!). And finally the roof.  The roof will host an outdoor dining space and a to-be-confirmed local flower market.

Then we move to Herald Square where the Urban Outfitters Lifestyle Center will be located.  Not many details are available yet on the “lifestyle center” but we do know that at over 61,000 square feet, it will be the brand’s largest store in the world and word is, it’s going to change the face of Herald Square. Reports say that the new location will be twice the size of the average Urban Outfitters and will be 3 stories.  We don’t know what this means, but sources say there will be “features never before seen from the brand.”

We’re big fans of Urban Outfitters and can’t wait to find out more details about these new locations. We’re especially excited to see how the pop-up shop space at the Williamsburg location turns out and are already coming up with ideas to get our own clients involved in the space.

The 2014 Sochi Olympics Uniforms Are A LOT

Let me preface this post by saying that I 100% love the 2014 uniform, or at least the top half of it, but it’s sure got a lot going on.  At first glance it appears that Ralph Lauren has designed a holiday ugly sweater for our Olympians, but on 2nd glance you really see the beauty of the Olympic Cardigan (check out that thick shawl collar). With the flags and the stars and the red, white and blue, it’s pretty much the greatest novelty sweater you’ll ever own. If I was one to spend upwards of $500 on novelty items, I’d certainly buy one.

As Olympic uniforms go, it may not be the classiest, but it will go down in the books as the funniest and my favorite to date (although I could do without the complimentary sweatpants).

Peter Pilotto For Target

Another collaboration is in the works and nearly upon us from shopping giant Target.  This latest capsule collection will come from Peter Pilotto, made by design duo Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos.

The Peter Pilotto vision of womenswear embraces both new and classic perspectives on elegance. wild prints combine with soft, sculptural shapes that feel both feminine and tough. As stated by Refinery 29, “like if the homecoming queen grew up to be a pro surfer and an aero-astro engineer.”

For the duo’s Target line, they translated that aesthetic to accessories for the first time, with a collection featuring swimwear, bags, sunglasses, shoes, and beach towels along with a versatile range of separates.  Word is that there are plenty of traditional and professional silhouettes, as well as flirty dresses and textured shorts. Quality is typical Target (not high, but durable enough to last a season).

The collection debuts on February 9th, in the middle of New York Fashion Week and will be available at Target stores around the country as well as online.
